Application Considerations

Landfill sites in Hong Kong are owned by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and managed by EPD's contractors. Currently, landfill gas power generation facilities installed in landfill sites generate electricity mainly for on-site use. Landfill gas is also used as a direct heating fuel in a landfill's leachate treatment plant. Surplus raw landfill gas is flared off for safety and environmental reasons.

Any proposal for taking landfill gas for off-site use shall be subject to the agreement of the Environmental Protection Department. An example is the use of landfill gas in the towngas production process, from the Shuen Wan Landfill and the North East New Territories Strategic Landfill.
