Resource Potential

According to the This link will open in a new windowrenewable energy study report of EMSD, thermal processes are much more efficient than landfilling (which is essentially a biological conversion process) in terms of energy recovery.

In the renewable energy study report, a scenario was assumed where 949,000 tons of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) undergo "bulk waste reduction" in each year, so as to prolong the life of the strategic landfills. This means treating 949,000 tons of municipal solid wastes each year in MSW combustion facilities with energy recovery, generating a total of 523 GWh of electricity per annum, which is equivalent to more than one percent of Hong Kong annual electricity demand.
